About

IMPORTANT information:

After a snowy winter and heavy rainfall, there is a risk of high water flow. The water flow can change from hour to hour as a result of power generation. This can create dangerous situations for people swimming.

Everyone must therefore be careful and respect the signs! More information can also be found here.

The Nissedal Potholes, this incredibly beautiful natural phenomenon, can be found in the very south of the municipality, near the small village of Eikhom, one mile from the Telemark Road.

The potholes are round or long depressions in solid rock and were created by meltwater during the Ice Age. The Fyresåna River has swirled around with rocks and gravel in the riverbed for centuries, which has since been regulated for electricity production. Before the power developers got to work, the potholes were a well-guarded secret under the water. It was only when a large part of the water masses were put into pipes that the round depressions in the riverbed became visible.

Popular swimming spot

Here you experience nature's own summer land. The Jettegrytene have been a popular bathing spot for the villagers for many years and they are almost like hot springs. The area is 300 meters long, with hot pots and wonderful slides. You will find them located in a narrow valley with mountains on both sides, where the sun really gets a good grip.

Jettegrytene was a well-kept secret for most people for a long time. A full-page report in Aftenposten about the beautiful rock formations changed this quite drastically. In addition, they were voted bathing place of the year in 1999 by NRK Telemark, Vestfold and Buskerud.

Water level

Å Energi informs that water levels can change from hour to hour. Staying and swimming are therefore at your own risk. Neither Visit Telemark nor Nissedal municipality has information about water levels.

Take good care of this natural gem

The area is very vulnerable. Do not make a fire on the rocky cliffs, as you risk cracking the rock. Think environmentally friendly and do not litter.

Access

A new parking lot has been created (pay with Vipps or cash) right after the Dynjanfoss power station.

NB! The road further into the potholes is private and is occasionally closed with a barrier. The municipality and Visit Telemark have no idea when you can drive all the way in or not. It may be open one day and closed the next.

You can cycle to the potholes, but it can be a bit "tricky" to get your bike over the barrier. If you choose to walk, you can take the shortcut under the log chute (it is forbidden to walk up the log chute), or walk the way around. The path under the log chute is not well marked. It is partly on rough and demanding terrain, and is not suitable for children under school age, people with strollers, etc. Wear sturdy footwear, e.g. hiking boots, sturdy sneakers, etc.

From Dynjanfoss power station and into the potholes there are:

- approx. 7 km by bike

- approx. 2 km on foot under the timber chute (turn right immediately after the bridge at Dynjanfoss power station).
